The Content of my Research Report and Why
My research report will be a reflective essay on how my workflow differentiates between creating stylised hand painted assets and realistic. I have chosen this topic specifically because one of my final goals as a concept artist is to work for Blizzard, and I want to continue improving my 3D and hand painted texturing skills as I know many of their concept artists do both when working there. I will be creating two assets for this, one hand painted and the other realistic; analysing my workflow for both and making informative conclusions and statements with how they differ and why.
How will it be assessed?
I will firstly be submitting a 1000 word draft for November 18th which will communicate the differences between stylised hand painted and realistic textures as well as the technical challenges for each. Within my final submission I will be creating two assets, one which is hand painted and the other realistic; analysing my workflow and making connections between the two as well as explaining how a particular software is often used for one yet not the other (for example the Substance package is mainly used for realistic assets rather than stylised).
Contextual Studies Lecture with Sharron (15th October )
In this lecture we learnt a bit more about the type of reports we were going to write, as well as thinking about our working title.
What I have settled on for now is..
'How does my workflow differentiate between hand painted and realistic asset creation?'
Researching a 'Reflective Report'
After the lecture with Sharron and viewing various final dissertations it became very clear that reflective journals weren't a very popular choice and difficult to execute well, as there were seemingly none on the VLE.
I understand that our university has a particular structure and grading system which will be very different to other curriculum's and establishments however I wanted to firstly do some research into how various types were written and what I could learn from them.
"Reflective writing differs from more 'objective' kinds of university writing as it encourages you to reflect upon your own thoughts, actions and experiences that relate to the content you are learning in your units."
"...reflective writing helps you to recognise the connections between what you already know and have experienced and what you are in the process of learning. It asks you to consider the connections between the theoretical aspects of your course and practical situations and experiences. "
"In that way, reflective writing prompts you to trace your own learning journey as you turn abstract theoretical concepts into more meaningful ideas by using your own knowledge and experiences to bring them to life. The reverse is also true: reflective writing helps you interpret real-life events and practical situations using relevant theories from the unit. "
