Self Evaluation

I started this project with absolutely no idea how to use zBrush, however finished it with hope to learn a lot more about this software in the future. The idea of digital sculpting has always appealed to me, and it gives such a great sense of creative freedom where the possibilities to create are limitless.

I believe that one of my strengths throughout this project has been my iteration quality of work, as I put a lot of time and thought into the meaning behind my concepts and iterative process, visually and symbolically Not only this, but showing my progression through text and imagery has also been my strength. I have documented my progression throughout my final sculpt in great detail. In addition to this, I have also constantly been updating my blog with information, and have been a lot more organized this BA compared to the last one. Another strength I have is persistence and perfectionism, which was what drove me to recreate the wings for my final sculpt three times. Because I was unhappy with the aesthetic of it, I did everything I could to fix it.

Regarding my strengths in contextual studies, I believe that the amount of quotes I gathered and implemented into my essay was my main strength; including the amount of educational texts cited.

My biggest weaknesses throughout this project have involved not implementing certain technical skills into my workflow, as well as being “forgetful” in using areas of zBrush. Not applying the “Backface Mask” while working regularly proved to create some very messy problems throughout my sculpt, especially as I heavily relied on the move tool; another one of my weaknesses. I also needed to constantly be thinking about typology when creating something, which was the sole reason why I discontinued making the first wings on my sculpt. I didn’t think how what I was doing would affect the typology at the time, even though I understand the importance of it. My biggest weakness while doing contextual studies was the amount of work I posted on my blog, including the research. While I’m happy with how many people I contacted, I believe I could’ve delved deep into other areas of the games industry and explored a wider variety of topics.

Being the perfectionist I am, I believe that I have never done “enough” work. One thing I hope to improve on is the amount of work, which is an ongoing goal of mine that will transpose itself to each project I complete in the future. Even though the way I managed my time was significantly better in this BA, I still have a lot to improve. I want to push myself to post something everyday, instead of updating every couple/few days. Another thing I hope to improve upon is the quality of my life drawing in the sessions we have, which ultimately comes down to repetitive practice and speed. I like to spend a lot of time on one piece, whereas in the sessions we’re taught to rapidly make sketches. I’m also going to start looking up more technical tutorials in zBrush, as I want to explore the software further.
