My Week 16 - Final Thoughts and Self Evaluation

Final Thoughts and Self Evaluation
Intro
So it seems the first part of my project has come to a close - but not end! It's definitely the one I have been most excited about as it's awesome to create my own brief and truly get stuck into it! I still draw a lot in my free time alongside previous university work, however it's great to fully commit what I want to draw with what is able to be graded. Since it is my final year and I will be searching for a job in the games industry within these coming months, as well as already applied for an internship at Rare; my focus has definitely been on quality moreso than quantity. I believe that a large body of work is of course still important and I think I have achieved the hours put in to this project which is to be expected, however have also been very quality conscious and spent much longer on a piece than perhaps I should have. I think this mindset has paid off however, as I feel like I have improved my general artistic skills a lot while thinking this way. Positives
As well as being aware of the quality of work I am producing since it is a competitive industry to get in to, I also have a better sense for the development process as a whole. I have become more comfortable with sketching and iterating, which is one of the key roles as a concept artist. Not only this, but I have improved my tonal drawing skills greatly as well, paying more attention to light and shadows, which is evident in my tonal iteration for the characters. Although I have a way to go with colour theory itself, I furthered my skills with finding a better way for me to colour drawings in Photoshop. This was starting in black and white, creating a 'Clipping Mask' over the tonal artwork and using the 'Multiply' layer type when colouring. In addition to artistic skills, I broadened my historic knowledge with learning about medieval Russia and Slavic mythology which was very interesting to research. Lastly, I am proud to have produced work that is very suitable for a portfolio and have been using everything I have created to help further my chances of getting a job - which to me seems to be one of the purposes of this course! Improvements
However, there were definitely things I could've improved upon while going through this project, especially as art itself is a constant learning curve. Firstly, I think my iteration progress could've been much more extensive if I had maybe produced less detailed sketches and drawings. This is definitely due to what I mentioned in the introduction about being quality conscious, which is a positive and negative. To combat this issue while continuing this project into BA3b, I will be diving deeper into the iterative process with my environment and promotional art pieces - especially because environments is what I'm weakest at.Secondly, although I constantly revised all my drawings multiple times I will definitely need to keep focusing on my anatomy; mainly with arms, legs, feet and hands. One of the things I struggle most with (alongside perspective, but that's for BA3b!) is colour theory. I will need to be on top of studying light throughout BA3b as I felt like I should've pushed this more in BA3a. Lastly, I feel like I managed my time quite well except I didn't factor in the quality I was trying to achieve while doing so, which is why I wasn't able to complete all 4 characters like I originally wanted. However, I have learnt from this and will be making sure I efficiently manage my time even moreso within BA3b.
Going Forward
Finally, (yes, the last paragraph!) one of my favourite things about this project is that I'm slowly starting to develop my own style, ala. Charlie Bowater-esque! As for going forward, I will be creating 3 finished environment concepts with development and 2 promotional art pieces with development as well. Towards the end of BA2b, I will also go back to my character designs to see if I can improve them for the May submission, as I should have enhanced my skills much more after the next few months.
In addition to this I will be making studies to help me progress and hope to visit many events to network with other people working in the games industry - as well as printing new business cards.
