Task 3 Brief
Loot Chest Loot chests are a common occurrence in video games, which are often spawned in various location or received upon defeating an enemy.
Concept Art Design three types of loot chests which can be easily interpreted into a 3D model. Design(s) must explore an alternate art style to that in which you normally work, i.e. realism > stylised, and vice-versa. · Basic Chest. · Rare Chest. · Boss Chest.
Thoughts
For this task I want to try and stray away from a more fantasy looking chest and focus on something a bit different, either sci-fi or nothing that resembles a wooden loot chest. Firstly I looked up different types of chests that could be made, including a couple fantasy ones for inspiration.

After this I wanted to specialise more with different themes, which led me to look at the loot boxes from SMITE and Overwatch - although most notably SMITE since they had props around each box which gave each a bit more originality in my opinion.

After searching for various loot boxes/chests from games themselves, I decided to look on ArtStation for some inspiration and came across these cute animal 'chest' designs by Sergei Ryzhov. Although he was creating one which would accompany his young witch character, I really love this idea of incorporating animals into the design so will be experimenting with this myself.

Animal Possibilities
Since we will be creating three different chests, one basic, another rare and lastly a boss (or legendary) version, I want to choose different animals to represent each one - mainly basing on size and ferocity. I think it's quite a cool idea because I'm not used to drawing animals much, and even though it's not sci-fi - it's still something that will be a challenge to me!

Basic Chest
For the basic chest, I want to use an animal which is big enough for the viewer to see but doesn't seem much of a threat - since I am also basing these on how intimidating the animal is as well. After thinking it over I came to the conclusion of using the deer, as a cat maybe slightly too small as well as the deer being less threatening than a fox.
Rare Chest
For the Rare chest, I wanted there to be a big leap between how threatening the animal was in comparison to the basic - which is why I have chosen a bear, lion and cobra (which would be up-scaled in size). After deliberating between the three I have chosen the lion because it's the most recognisable out of them all
Boss Chest
For the Boss chest, I have chosen three different creatures from mythology to represent it, being a dragon, Hydra and a lesser known one being called 'Typhon'. Despite the fact that Typhon is not as famous as the other two, it is known to be one of the most fearsome creatures in Greek mythology and often being called 'the father of monsters'. Choosing my creature for this chest was definitely not an easy one as I think they all represent the ideals I have mentioned, however there can only be one choice.
I really wanted to go with Typhon as this creature was the most interesting of the three, but the more I thought about it; the more I imagined him being a boss than representing the chest. Because animals will be carrying these chests, it was difficult to imagine Typhon being able to do so as he is so powerful. This was a similar reason for my doubts about using the Hydra, as the creature is meant to be carrying the players reward yet a Hydra is something evil that would more likely be faced. Lastly we come to the dragon, which is of course the most cliche but it really fits what I want with this idea!
What could be cooler than defeating a boss and having a dragon swoop down with a giant chest full of treasure on its back to reward you? Although dragons are creatures which could possibly be evil, it's easier to imagine one being a good character than a Hydra or Typhon.
Another cool idea I thought about for adding rarity to these animals is by giving each the colours of bronze, silver and gold. This works well for the basic chest being a deer as its coat is similar to bronze anyway, the lion would be silvery white and the dragon would be gold.

Overall I wish I had time to polish these more because I did have limited time with these since I had been focusing on my creative practice project, so I'm not overly keen with how they look. As for the difference in art-style, I haven't added thick outlines to my work for a really long time (since I drew anime when I was around 15) - so I decided to do that for this task as an experiment.
