Character Art Style Research

The art style I will be pushing forward for my project will be painterly with realistic looking characters.

Even Amundsen

Even’s work has been a inspiration in terms of the personality he gives to his characters as well as them being historically based. Most notably the images below are influenced by eastern Europe and Russia—which has been a starting point for how I would potential envision my characters being like.

Esben Rassmussen

Although my final pieces won’t be as colourful as Esben’s work, I adore his use of dynamic composition within his art. When I start my promotional pieces in BA3b I will be taking influence from the way he creates his scenes and using the same methods.

Kekai Kotaki

Kekai Kotaki is definitely one of my favourite concept artists with his ability to create unique and diverse characters for the games industry. He is the artist I will be constantly looking back to in order to improve my own work.

Nathan Park

Nathan’s work is the level of skill I am aiming to achieve by the end of May with his solid tones and his overall art style. From observation it looks like he mostly used one brush which is what I also usually use when painting.

Character Profiles

Ivan (Half Human/Undead after being resurrected)

Appearance Age: Late 20’s/Early 30’s

Hair: Brown/Black (White streak after resurrection)

Eyes: Blue

Character Influences: Jon Snow (Game of Thrones), Faramir (Lord of the Rings), Bilbo (The Hobbit), Prince Caspian (The Adventures of Narnia - Prince Caspian)

Weapon: Saber and Bow (with Quiver)

The way I see Ivan is not the typical princely hero, which is why I have added Faramir and Bilbo from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit instead of someone like Aragorn. Visually Bilbo isn't exactly how I want to design Ivan, but I'm fond of the idea of how Ivan was never looking for an adventure but it was more like it was struck upon him. He is still the hero of this tale however is the type who is humble and unsure of himself, not the greatest warrior in battle but still acts with courage, bravery and with good, morally correct intentions.

Eyes: Green

Character Influences: Alloy (Horizon Zero Dawn), Merida (Brave), Astrid (How to Train Your Dragon), Lagertha (Vikings)

Weapon: Ceremonial Axe and Shield

The reason why Marya doesn't carry a bow unlike Ivan, is because Ivan travels alone and therefore it is desirable to have when hunting for food. Whereas Marya travels with an army where she is in command, deciding on tactics with higher ranked soldiers instead while the lower ranked would be hunting for food (for the group).
